2021 Visual Sociology and Visual Methodology Awards: Call for nominations

May 1, 2021 is the deadline for submitting nominations for the International Visual Association’s (IVSA) 2021 Rieger and Prosser Awards.

Rieger Awards are for outstanding work in visual sociology (as a thesis/dissertation or as a project/paper) by graduate students. Prosser Awards are for outstanding work in visual methodologies by beginning scholars.

AWARDS: Award winners for each program receive a cash prize of $1000 USD, an invitation to publish digital representations of their work through the IVSA web site, and a certificate of merit from the IVSA. Award winners will also receive a fee waiver for the 2021 conference to receive their award and present their work (July 5-8 2021 – online) and a complimentary year’s honorary membership in the IVSA. https://visualsociology.org/?page_id=936

ELIGIBILITY and NOMINATIONS:  Any active IVSA member can submit a nomination (including a self-nomination) for either award. Nominees do not need to be IVSA members, but they must be nominated by an IVSA member. Non-members who want to nominate themselves or someone else can do so by first joining the IVSA. See below for more information about review criteria, eligibility and the nomination process for each Award Program.

RIEGER AWARDS:  For Outstanding Graduate Student Work In Visual Sociology

Eligibility and Nominations: To be considered for a Rieger Award, graduate students must be nominated by a current IVSA member and have completed a masters thesis or doctoral dissertation during the preceding two years (since January 1, 2019). Nominees must have been graduate students when they completed the thesis, dissertation, paper or project for which they have been nominated. Nominees themselves do not have to be IVSA members, but if they are, they can self-nominate.

How to Submit: All nominations and supplementary materials should be submitted by May 1 2021 (in English) as PDFs or links to a web site through the online Rieger Award nomination form in the members section of the IVSA

Review Criteria: Work nominated for Rieger awards will be evaluated by the IVSA Awards Review Committee for its thoughtfulness, significance and creativity in addressing issues of interest to members of the IVSA. Special consideration is given to work that:

– Enhances the theory and/or practice of visual sociology;

– Enriches understanding of culture and social life;

– Contributes new insights to social scientific research and practice; and/or

– Models creative and effective applications of visual imagery to social research.

Award Categories: Rieger Award nominations are invited for outstanding work in two different formats: a masters thesis or doctoral dissertation; or a paper or project.

Rieger Award Nomination Materials: For a Master’s Thesis or Doctoral

Dissertation:

– Contact information for the nominee and the nominating IVSA member: name, position, academic department or program, institution, telephone and email address.

– A nomination letter (1000 words max) from the nominating IVSA member, recommending the student’s work in terms of the Awards Program review criteria (see above).

– Written confirmation of the date that the nominee’s thesis or dissertation was completed.

– For Masters Students: A copy of the complete thesis and thesis abstract.

For Doctoral Students: A copy of sample chapters (60 pages max) and a dissertation abstract. Note: Doctoral student nominees also may be asked to submit their full dissertation at a later date.

Rieger Award Nomination Materials: For a Project or Paper:

– Contact information for the nominee and the nominating IVSA member: name, position, academic department or program, institution, telephone and email address.

– A nomination letter (1000 words max) from the nominating IVSA member, recommending the student’s work in terms of the Awards Program review criteria (see above).

– Written confirmation that the nominated work was completed during the previous two years and while the nominee was a graduate student.

– A digital copy of the nominated paper or project (e.g. PDF or online gallery/resource).  NOTE: The paper or project completion must involve submission by the student to a course, presentation at a conference or workshop, publication, or incorporation in a public exhibit.

PROSSER AWARDS: For Outstanding Early Career Scholars Working with Visual Methodologies

Eligibility And Nominations: To be considered for a Prosser Award, candidates must be nominated by a current IVSA member and have completed outstanding work in visual methodologies during the previous two years. As “beginning scholars,” nominees also must be either current graduate students or scholars who completed their graduate degree program since January 1, 2016. Nominees do not have to be IVSA members, but if they are, they can self-nominate.

Review Criteria: Each nominee’s work will be evaluated by the IVSA Awards Review Committee to assess its thoughtfulness, significance and creativity in addressing issues of interest to members of the IVSA. In examining the work of Prosser Award Nominees, the Review Committee will give special consideration to work that:

– Enhances the theory and/or practice of visual methodologies;

– Contributes new insights to participatory approaches, visual representation, and analysis;

– Enriches understanding of culture and social life; and/or

– Models creative and effective applications of visual imagery to critical inquiry.

Nomination Materials: For a Prosser Award

– Contact information for the nominee and the nominating IVSA member: name, position, academic department or program, institution, telephone and email address.

– A nomination letter (1200 words max) from the nominating IVSA member, recommending the nominee’s work in terms of the Awards Program review criteria (see above).

– Supplemental documents and work products (not exceeding 5,000 words and

10 images) that illustrate the exceptional value and potential of the nominee’s contributions to visual methodologies.

– Evidence confirming current graduate student status or the completion of graduate degrees since January 1, 2016.
