Title: Temporalities in/of Ethnography: Queer(ing) Time in Studying School Literacy and Language Practices

Abstract: Ethnographers studying oral and written oral language practices discuss time as an integral part of ethnography, such as the traditional idea that ethnographies have a minimum time requirement of fieldwork, often of at least a year (e.g., Blommaert & Jie, 2020; Heath & Street, 2008). In this talk, rather than treating time as a background ambience, I consider how time is actively constructed by ethnographers and cultural members. I discuss examples from an ethnography I conducted at a high school in the midwestern U.S. in which I explored how students and teachers talked, wrote, and read about sexual and gender diversity. I then read these ethnographic vignettes through queer theories of time, ultimately reflecting on how ethnographers might rethink time in fieldwork, data analysis, and ethnography broadly as a genre.

Dr. Ryan Schey is Assistant Professor of English Education at the University of Georgia. A former high school English teacher and GSA co-adviser, his research explores language and literacy practices and social change, focusing on queer and trans youth and their teachers.
