Discovering Black Existentialism: A Qualitative Journey

Black Existentialism is a philosophical tradition encompassing diverse depictions, articulations, theories, and interpretations of Black life under White supremacy. As a burgeoning scholar in the field of Black Existentialism, my trajectory has been marked by numerous twists and turns. In this presentation, I will reflect on my journey to Black Existentialism, shedding light on the pivotal theories, scholars, and philosophies that acted as breadcrumbs leading me to its multifaceted traditions. As a critical qualitative scholar, I will also expound upon the methodologies and methods employed in my investigations of the Black lived experience. Additionally, drawing from my role as an assistant professor, I will offer my thoughts on the intricate balance required to be effective in the classroom, productive as a researcher, and impactful in service to the community. This talk aims to provide insights into the intellectual and practical dimensions of engaging with Black Existentialism while offering a nuanced perspective on the experiences of a Black faculty member. E. Anthony Muhammad is an Assistant Professor of Educational Research and affiliate faculty in the department of Africana Studies at Georgia Southern University. As a critical qualitative methodologist, his research agenda combines qualitative methodologies and critical frameworks in an effort to educate, emancipate, and transform. His research interests include Black Existential Philosophy, Africana Phenomenology, Black embodiment, philosophical hermeneutics, the intersection of racial and religious alterity, and qualitative inquiries into the Nation of Islam. E. Anthony holds a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Southern University and A&M College (a HBCU), a Master’s degree in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from the University of Baltimore, and a Ph.D. in Qualitative Research Methodologies from the University of Georgia.
